General question for all of you. What would you-...

[No, that's not a good idea. He doesn't need that, she has told him several times, right? She likes books, which means a book is probably the best gift, he doesn't need to ask what to give her. A book will do. She also liked the plushies he gave her before so there's that, maybe he can get a teddy bear for her on top of it, since if she loves books that much she probably has read a lot of them.

Book recommendations. Anyone knows of interesting books to read? Novels, tales, science, any theme will do.

An arctic wolf, he's little over one year old, still a puppy. He lost his last puppy tooth a few months ago.

That's amazing! I didn't realize you could train a wolf. Er--then again, I bet most people don't think you can train a dragon, either.

I'm pretty sure you can train anything that has enough brain to learn, which excludes only a few insects. But I'm not training him, he doesn't do tricks or anything like that. I want to try to teach him how to hunt by himself and all for when I leave and he's left alone though.

Yes, I got him from a statue the Malnosso put in the square a year ago. I suppose he was my Christmas gift. Figures they would think that living beings are gifts.

Yeah, that's kind of...odd. [He tries to imagine someone giving a person a dragon as a gift--he doubts creatures so proud would even stand for it.] But I guess that's the Malnosso for you. Odd.

I suppose that when you keep hundreds of people trapped in a place and experiment on them and use them for your own entertainment, you fail to see a difference between them and objects. More than odd I would call them irresponsible.

[The 'own entertainment' thing seems especially true after the recent love experiment, even if Hiccup flew under the radar for that.] They're...well, hard to understand, to say the least. The drafts and experiments are bad, but there are a lot of good things about this place, too.

Well--like the people, for one. I've met a lot of people here who are...really important to me now.

People don't change what this place is. In fact they only make it worse, just for being here they make you have to choose between your home and this illusion.

I guess it's a good tactic to keep people from trying to get out too much.

But the friendships are real. They're definitely not an illusion. And--they're not the only thing. Here, I can--learn. So much more than I could back home. Here, people...accept me for being myself.

So you prefer to be here than at your home? Even if this place is a prison? Just because back there you have yet to meet people who would accept you for being yourself or teach you things you never imagined you could learn? I have the impression that most worlds are really big and have many people, unless you can assure me your world is really small, then you're just comparing a place that gathers people from many places to a place that only has one type of people.

No--that's not it. I want to go home, too. I do. But there's just a lot of things I can do here that I--can't do there. And traveling is sort of...out of the picture. I mean, even if I got to visit other vikings, they'd be the same way. I've heard stories about the continent, but vikings only go there to raid and trade, and...that's not for me.

Who says you have to do what other vikings do when going to the continent?

I can't sail a boat there by myself. And I don't think Toothless could fly that far if I even knew how to get there.

And the option of have your dragon pull at the boat at times and rest on it when it's tired isn't viable? Or just going with them and ditching them before they even get to the coast.

There's still that...navigation issue. I don't know how to get there by myself, and I--I could abandon my people like that.

[Accepting or not, they're still family.] Besides, I've been...reading about the mainland while I've been here. And they wouldn't take kindly to a viking scholar. I mean--there aren't exactly scholars to begin with, outside the church. If it's even the same world as mine.

Sooner or later you will have to leave them if you want to do what you want to do and can't do it with them. Being apart doesn't mean you're not family anymore or whatever. Unless you don't want to take the holds of your own life and prefer others to decide on it for you, in that case I suppose this place isn't that bad.

[But it just isn't that simple--or possible.] It's not that I can't do it with them--I can't do it there, period. The things I could learn there aren't at all like the things I can learn here. We don't even know what stars are.

So you're fine with being a prisoner and a guinea pig if you can learn all those things you can't learn at your home. Even if it means not being with your people and even if you will just forget everything once you return? Or will you choose to not return if given the chance?

So why bother arguing when he knows that the one who's not fooling himself is him? Let the other enjoy his stars and friends while he can. It won't last.]
